Prairie Heart Foundation

The Prairie Heart Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Prairie Heart Institute. Gifts to Prairie Heart Foundation impact heart  and vascular patients from central and southern Illinois and beyond. Whether it’s supporting a groundbreaking procedures, bringing new treatments and technologies to our region, or establishing innovative practices – Prairie Heart donors ensure the best heart and vascular care in the nation is available locally.

Each year, Prairie benefits from the generosity of our donors. The reason behind one’s gift vary – just as personal interests and financial situations vary between individuals. The common thread woven throughout philanthropic giving is the desire to make Prairie the best place to receive care for the people of central and southern Illinois and beyond.

With your gift to the Prairie Heart Foundation, you can directly support innovative technology, expanded access to patient care, research, patient and operating rooms, medical education, equipment, and where the need is the greatest. You may also pay tribute to a special person who made a difference in your visit or stay with us. Your caregiver will receive an acknowledgment letter announcing a contribution has been made in his or her honor.

Thank you for your generosity that allows us to continue our shared mission to deliver nationally recognized care in local communities, as well as developing new and more efficient ways of meeting our patients’ needs.

The Dove Society

Prairie’s founder, Dr. James T. Dove, was an Ohio native and was a driving force in changing the medical landscape of Springfield.

He moved here in 1973 to work at the Springfield Clinic. By 1979, he had established Prairie, with the goal to deliver state-of-the-art critical medical care to people outside metropolitan areas, according to Dr. Marc Shelton, President, Prairie Cardiovascular, who was recruited by Dove 20 years ago to become Prairie’s 12th physician.

We serve all of Illinois south of I-80. Because of Prairie, people now come to Springfield for other kinds of care as well as heart – pulmonary, gastrointestinal, oncology, surgery. It’s uncommon for a medical group to extend itself to 43 rural areas the way Prairie does. This was Jim’s vision all along, but even he had to be a little surprised how it has grown. We easily count more than 100,000 patient visits every year.

Dove’s reach extended far beyond Illinois. He served as president of the American College of Cardiologists, which has 39,000 members. “They don’t take each other lightly,” says Shelton. “Jim was exceptionally hard working. Cardiologists often work all day and all night. I don’t think Jim ever worked less than a 12-hour day.”

The Dove Society allows individuals to support the Prairie Heart Foundation with an annual commitment. As a Dove Society member, your contribution will have significant reach and impact across Prairie Heart Institute of Illinois. Your contributions will help fund a nationally recognized leader in heart care.

“I’ve been to Mayo and other places and I don’t think you can get any better care when it comes to cardiology than with Prairie. Without Prairie, I wouldn’t be here, many people throughout Illinois would not be here, and Illinois would not be the great place that it is to live and raise a family.”

Jim Edgar, Former Governor of Illinois
